Neill’s family released a statement:
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news that Sir Sam passed away peacefully today, surrounded by his family. The loss was sudden and unexpected, and while our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing he was with those he loved most.”

Sam Neill: Early Life and Career

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, Northern Ireland, he moved with his family to New Zealand as a child. After studying English literature at the University of Canterbury, he began working in New Zealand film before making his breakthrough in Roger Donaldson’s 1977 thriller ‘Sleeping Dogs.’
International attention soon followed with acclaimed performances in ‘My Brilliant Career’ opposite Judy Davis and ‘Possession,’ establishing Neill as one of the most compelling actors of his generation. Throughout the 1980s, he built a reputation for effortlessly moving between romance, drama, horror, and adventure.

Neill achieved worldwide fame in 1993 as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park.’ His grounded, quietly heroic performance helped anchor one of the biggest blockbusters in film history, and he later reprised the role in ‘Jurassic Park III’ and ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’.
His film career also included standout performances in ‘Dead Calm,’‘The Hunt for Red October,’‘The Piano,’‘Event Horizon,’‘In the Mouth of Madness’ and ‘The Dish,’ showcasing a versatility that made him equally at home in prestige dramas, thrillers, science fiction, and comedy.
On television, Neill earned Emmy nominations for ‘Merlin’ and ‘Wild New Zealand’ and introduced himself to a new generation of audiences as Chief Inspector Chester Campbell in ‘Peaky Blinders.’ In later years, he also starred in series including ‘Invasion,’‘Apples Never Fall,’ and ‘The Twelve,’ remaining one of the industry’s most respected and dependable performers.

Away from the cameras, Neill was known for his humor, generosity, and love of life on his Central Otago vineyard, where his social media posts featuring farm animals and everyday moments earned him a devoted following.
In 2023, he publicly revealed he had been treated for a rare form of blood cancer, using his memoir and interviews to discuss his diagnosis with characteristic honesty and optimism. Earlier this year, he announced he was cancer-free following an innovative treatment, while continuing to advocate for greater access to cancer research and therapies in Australia and New Zealand.
Knighted for his services to drama, Sir Sam Neill leaves behind a body of work that spans more than five decades and countless unforgettable performances. Whether portraying scientists, villains, heroes, or ordinary men facing extraordinary circumstances, he brought intelligence, warmth, and quiet humanity to every role, securing his place as one of New Zealand’s greatest actors.
